Have you been to a Quaker meeting before? Most of the service is in silence. This can be confusing your first time. I know I wondered if someone had forgotten to begin. Millville is an old meeting. It's been around for a long time and you feel like you have gone back in time sitting in the ancient wooden benches. But the spirit inside is vibrant and there are lots of young people and Families along with the older Quakers. In addition to the weekly service, often after the service there is an adult first day, a Sunday school of sorts for adults. Topics range from a variety of issues including social justice, peace, and even practical interest that someone in the meeting might have. To me a Quaker Meeting is a church for adults where we do not look too paid clergy to make the magic happen. one feature that stands out in this meeting is the ticking clock on the wall. It is loud and insistent, but after going several times to the meeting this noise Fades into the background and becomes part of the atmosphere. In fact one Quaker in the meeting said that they only noticed the clock when it stopped ticking.
