the place is very beautiful. 4 stars because the Monastery was closed. we went with a private car. the road was fabulous. full of beautiful sight the 9th of April the weather was kinda cold , a little bit rainy. we couldn't see the Monastery due to the fog , because we were literally in the clouds.

Very beautiful place to visit. It is better to choose warm weather and an open day to visit or else, if you would like to travel during winter season, it is much better to visit the monastery during snow. The mountains will be clear to see. So, I advise you to decide about timing before going. Because you will be able to see how breathtaking the mountains and the monastery are.

Sumela Monastery sits high up on the cliffs of Mount Mela, south of Trabzon. It was founded in the 4th century by two Greek monks, Barnabas and Sophronius, who were guided to the site by an icon of a “black” image of the Virgin, allegedly painted by St Luke. After their deaths, Sumela became a place of pilgrimage. It was decorated with frescoes, and its treasures included priceless manuscripts and silver plates. The monastery was rebuilt several times – the ruins seen by today’s visitors date largely from the 19th century. In the Ottoman era, Sumela enjoyed the protection of the sultans, but it was abandoned and badly damaged during the War of Independence. Extensive restoration work has been carried out to preserve the monastery

Amazing, but most of the buildings were under rehabilitation. Not suitable for elderly , stairs for about 750 m . Entry Ticket 50 TL , another 6 TL for shuttle bus two way ticket between Car Park and Monastery door . I think very expensive especially when you are unable to access most of the Monastery .

The ticket is 50 liras but I didn't think it was worth it. The place is almost all renovated so there isn't really much to see and because it was still under construction, half of it it was closed The only interesting thing is this small chapel but if you have seen the Kapadokyan churches then you got the idea. Going there and the views from outside is the cool thing.

Very amazing place, a real hidden jewel inside a beautiful forest. The way up is a great fun ( by minibus then stairs). I would recommend going there with a tour.

This place is beyond imagination!! Mystical passages and walking among mountains with the fog is really an experience. Unfortunately, the place itself is closed for renovations for years now.. you can see the works and appreciate the effort actually!! I think it will need around two more years to complete. You have to take a small bus up the hill, which costs you 6 TL a person (for a two-way trip) , then you need to walk about 300 m in a mountain passage. My children found it very exciting experience and it was really nice. I heard you need to pay around 10 TL to enter the entrance only, but I and my family were exempted because we had (Müze Kart ). If you live in Turkey , make sure to have this card. There are other similar cards for tourists (Museum Pass).

Don't waste your time! I'm sure this will be a great place once the restoration is finished, but as of today 15/9/20 you can barely see anything. Basically, it costs 50t to see one small room, the rest is closed. When we asked for a refund as they did not tell us the majority was closed they said it was not their problem.
