Unbelievably wonderful experience! First off the staff. They are incredibly friendly, welcoming, funny, and great at their respective jobs. The food? Authentic and divine. Served fresh, timed perfectly and I simply can't say enough about how great this little cafe is. The atmosphere is clean, simple and warm. You will not be disappointed if you try Machico!

The place is so authentic that once you step in, you forget you are in England. You hear Portuguese as most customer and the whole staff are from there; the TVs are always playing football matches, people are loud and one of the waitress speaks little English. If you can accept this, be prepared to be rewarded with some of the best seafood and fish you can get in London for an unbelievably cheap price! I eat here once a month. Be warned:

Friendly service, grand size portions at reasonable prices. My cod Abras was mild in taste and half of it came home with me for lunch the next day. My friend's grilled chicken was simple and much enjoyed. As I was driving I had an alcohol free dark beer which I've not seen before and enjoyed. Restaurant was quiet, hopefully they will pick up some business.

It was pouring with rain and my boyfriend was starving. As we walked in, the place felt very authentic - like we had left England: a bar in the corner propped up by three men noisily talking politics and downing finos, an implacable middle aged woman, peacefully drying dishes, an elderly man taking his time over a delicious looking plate of food - piled high, colourful. Hmm, I thought, we might be in for a treat here. But sadly not. The menu has no clues to it and the woman didn't speak English so she called her husband. Apparently everything was fried in batter and came with chips or rice. We ordered, but after waiting for 40 minutes, only my plate arrived: 'bacalao chef'. Now a Portuguese restaurant should do good bacalao surely? I was expecting creamy, smoky cod with potatoes. Instead it was a gigantic piece of white fish, complete with skin and bones, fried in batter in an apparently lukewarm fryer, the batter was pale and flabby and entirely unseasoned. It was accompanied by greasy fried potatoes, a few red pepper rings and doused in approximately half a pint of cheap olive oil. It was the most off putting plate of food I've had in a long time. My boyfriend's food never arrived, but they tried charging for it anyway. When we pointed that out, the woman apologised and took the non-arrival off the bill, but didn't deduct anything else as an apology. The whole experience took over an hour. Don't bother. Really. Go home and have a sandwich instead.
