The 1795 Boating Disaster in Lough Derg On the twelve of July 1795 as The eleven O'Clock ferry carrying 93 pilgrims and crew approached Friars’ Island and Station Island, the boat sprung a leak. Mass panic ensued and the boat capsizes. It is reported that as many as ninety pilgrims and boatmen perished. Some of the drowned were buried without coffins in an improvised mass grave on Friars’ Island to the east of the pilgrim isle and the in local parish graveyard. Other bodies were conveyed on horseback and cart to the pilgrims homes. It was reported that a local Protestant Farmer from Dromore, Co Tyrone sent his horses and cart to carry the deceased back to the local parish . Deceased Pilgrims were transported as far as Connacht. Most of the drowned were Catholic pilgrims, others were Protestant boatmen.

Home to a pilgrimage of penance, the Lough Derg pilgrimage is spread over three days. You keep a strict fast, walk over stones in bare feet, deprive yourself of sleep, chant hundreds of prayers - and feel amazingly good after it even though it doesn't make sense.

I missed the boat to the island but walked around along the lake, it is very calm, pure nature and beautiful place. there is Pilgrim walk - take that! and there is picnic spot with wooden table and bench and space for open fire (not sure if it still allowed there).
