Hands-down my favourite Japanese in London! It has two stars for a reason! Chef Yoshinori Ishii is inspired and combines the best traditions of his Kyoto training with the freshest ingredients to be found on these shores (check out the sea urchin, er, platter in the photo: they were sourced from the Shetland Islands, Scotland and Iceland - if memory serves). Umu also boasts one of THE best sake menus outside Japan. The secret, I am told, is the rationing system: there is only so much sake to go around and since the sake houses know Yoshi-san, they will reserve parcels for him. So: full tasting menu with sake flight is where you will find heaven!

Very satisfied with food, service and ambience of the resturant. You will find out the answer to why this resturant is well known and has good reviews once you visit this place and give it a try. You will not regret it!

Visited the restaurant on October 12th, 2020 for the 12th year anniversary celebration with my wife. Before making an appointment, I was bit hesitant because of a lot of bad or mediocre reviews on Google. However, it turned out to be the needless concern. Wish I could give 6 or 7 stars to this restaurant. We sat near the counter area and it was very interesting to watch the chefs' culinary skills. The service level was excellent and every people at the restaurant was extremely polite and kind. Ordered the Autumn Kaiseki menu. Although it was 195/per person, it was very worth it. Every single item was an art from the chefs at the restaurant and we could tell ingredients in each menu are very high quality. It is impossible to have this level of Asian or Japanese food in London or the UK. You maybe able to find the similar level of Japanese restaurants in Japan, but it is very rare even in Japan. We have been to almost every Michelin two-star restaurants in the UK, but this definitely tops them out. Even last anniversary celebration dessert was super tasty. We tried the Autumn kaiseki today, but we would definitely come back for the Winter, Spring and Summer ones as well. Highly recommended!

Tradition and creativity. Inspirational and impossibly good. A corner of Japan in a Mayfair halliway. Prices are high, but you pay for impeccable quality.

I went there having high hopes but came out disappointed starting with the service (although my main server was good). The food was good but of a level that I could get easily in Japan that doesn’t have any stars (and still pay similar prices). If I didn’t know that they had 2 Michelin stars, I would have walked out thinking it was just a good Japanese restaurant in London.
