Brilliant . A must for canal boaters and walkers and enthusiasts of the industrial revolution. Not as scary as I thought crossing on a boat. Too busy keeping straight and not bumping the sides and have a good grip on the tiller. Definitely on the to do list. Nice pub situated at Trevor and walking or boating to take the tow path up to the end at Llangollen is not only beautiful but lovely places to eat. Be aware this canal has a current and after Trevor the canal narrows with sharp turns. Send a crew member ahead . There are limited passing places. But don't let this put you off. It's all worth it and has a marina which for a small fee can moor in and take the horse drawn boat up to the end at horseshoe falls.

It's a spot to be in your itinerary. Don't be any super excited as it's just a small canal with water at a height of around 80 meters if I recollect. There are 2 nice photo opportunities, one obviously from the top alongside the canal or waterway and the nicer one is all the way at the bottom of the structure. There is a serene picturesque walkway to go down where you can see the river unwinding and the aqueduct in its magnificence. Visit if you have time, skip if you have better alternatives. Worth one time visit.

Fantastic day out for big and small. We parked the car at the Trevor Tea room, 2 all day, lovely food there , seats in and outside, small playground next to it, worth leaving the car there the aqueduct is amazing, the path is narrow so social distancing could be difficult on a busy day and the railings have large gaps between so you have to watch small kids! It is lovely to watch the canal boats going through, few people were canoeing. The view point walk is worth doing so you can admire the aqueduct from the distance. Toilets are open, small shop where you can hire the boat sells ice cream and Welsh souvenirs. We will defo go back there for a longer visit:)

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct came about as a result of the Ellesmere Canal project intended to link the River Mersey with the River Dee and then on to the River Severn at Shrewsbury. The proposed canal would have several branches providing access to the lucrative ironworks & collieries around the Wrexham area of North Wales. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct literally translates as “the bridge that connects the river”. Of course any significant civil engineering project of that era was bound to involve that great engineer Thomas Telford, amongst many other leading engineers & builders. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was finally opened on 26-Nov-1805 having taken ten years to design, build and test.

A World Heritage Site and with good reason! Truly a remarkable piece of engineering. If the workmanship isn't your cup of tea however, I'll let the view speak for its self. Not recommended if you have a fear of heights! Be careful on windy days. It can be particularly blustery in the middle of the bridge. Always walk single file and if on a bike, hop off and walk it across for your own safety.
