In the AVOG’s CRASH MUSEUM you get an impression of the history of the 1940-1945 Air War over the Netherlands and in particular over the Achterhoek through a film and a permanent exhibition. What consequences did this have for the airmen and the population? The museum was first opened to the public in May 1981 as a result of ten years of research and preparation. In addition to being a tribute to the allied airmen who sacrificed their lives for our freedom, this museum provides an insight into the technical side of the 1940-1945 Air War. The air forces of England, America and Germany brought many different types of aircraft into battle. From a number of these - which crashed in the Achterhoek - you will see some parts in our exhibition space, such as aircraft engines, propellers, landing gear, wings, oxygen tanks and cockpit instruments. You will also see parts that were on board during the crash, such as flight equipment, navigation material (kite maps), on-board weapons, aircraft ammunition and radio installations. Around 6500 aircraft crashed in our country during the Second World War; approximately 400 of these ended up in the Achterhoek. 90% of what you see in the museum has been excavated by us since 1972, the rest comes from private ownership. Of many aircraft that took off in England and Germany, the crash sites are still unknown, while often the crew members are still missing. In addition to the fact that AVOG wants to help shorten these so-called missing lists, it primarily wants to preserve a history of the Achterhoek for the future. The museum also continuously shows the film: \The Air War revives\ (own production). This film gives a global overview of the 1940-1945 Air War over Europe and specifically over \The Achterhoek\.
