We were surprised at how big it is because the pictures don't do it justice! We parked on the road (for free) and walked up several steps and a short but fairly steep walk up to the castle. Not really suitable for prams or those with mobility difficulties. The walk up was minor compared to some hills we have had to climb to explore castles. The castle ruins are stunning and there are some towers and tunnels intact so you can really get a feel for how life may have been like living in medieval Britain! There are also some really informative boards that show how things may have looked. The views from the top are lovely and you can see for miles!

Camping in the lake district and just stumbled on this place. Randomly out the way and sat on top of the hill with a fortified position with views all around the valley, the town and even the peaks of the lake district. Very interesting found out that Queen Katherine lived here one of Henry VIII wives. Not really a castle but more a fortified house. Some parts of walls and buildings in place. The moat is impressive and very steep to the top of walls. People travelled here from all over the area in medieval times it was the house of the local lord and was the focal point of the village of Kendle. Long since forgotten but lots of dog walkers around instead. Worth a visit if you enjoy medieval history.

Great walk out for a few hours. There is a carpark with a play area and a shop at the bottom. Ruins are really interesting. Some parts are muddy so slippy. Wellies or walking boots needed in parts. A few interesting signs to read on the way around.

The remains of this castle give an insight into life during the medieval era in and around Kendal with the aid of an audio tour accessed via an online app. The views of the surrounding area and Kendal are also spectacular, and all this is free. If you are visiting Kendal it's well worth a look in whilst you're there.
