My husband and I stayed in the cottage at Ørslevkloster for two days while visiting the Nordfjends villages where my ancestors had lived before emigrating to America in the 1850s. The accommodations are ascetic--although the radiant heaters and Wi-Fi ("a 21st-century manifestation of the spirit," according to the caretaker) work effectively. If you stay in the main building, you will have to share a communal bathroom and kitchen. You also will have to accept responsibility for cleaning up after yourself and preparing your own meals, but the experience will be unforgetable. The estate manager (a native English-speaker) graciously took time to show us around the property and tell us about its history. The grounds include several hectares of woods with defined walking trails, as well as livestock pastures, cropland, orchards, and a vegetable garden. The nearby village of Højslev can supply you with groceries and other services. If you're seeking a place for quiet reflection and inspiration without spending a fortune, this is it.
