I last came to Hurst point about fourteen years ago. I don't think anything was open then - it looks as though a lot of restoration work has happened since. Nothing was really open today either, of course (COVID-19 lockdown, for the benefit of anyone reading in the future!), but I definitely want to come back when things re-open - everything looks well kept and very interesting, and there is clearly still restoration work going on.
Lovely walk , or take the boat, the walk is on pebble beach so can be tough the walk is about 1.5 miles. Castle was Very overpriced and not worth the Five pound per person. But the views and walk are worth the time it takes to get there.
Having walked this in 2012, I can safely advise you to wear some good walking shoes because walking over all that shingle is very hard work. Hurst Castle is situated at the seaward end of the shingle spit that extends 1.5 miles from Milford-On-Sea. The Lighthouse is right next to the Castle. The end of the spit, only three-quarters of a mile from the Isle of Wight, and the views from the top of the centre keep are spectacular. Hurst Castle on the south coast of England is one of Henry VIII's Device Forts, built at the end of a long shingle spit at the west end of the Solent to guard the approaches to Southampton. Hurst Castle was sited at the narrow entrance to the Solent where the ebb and flow of the tides create strong currents, putting would-be invaders at its mercy. Also known as a Henrician Castle, Hurst was built as part of Henry's chain of coastal defences to protect England during the turbulent times of his reign. Charles I was imprisoned here in 1648 before being taken to London to his trial and execution. The fort was modified throughout the 19th century, and two large wing batteries were built to house heavy guns. It was fortified again in World War II and then decommissioned. It is now owned by English Heritage and is open to the public. Opening times 1st April to 30th September 10.30 am to 5.30 pm daily. 1st October to 4th November 10.30 am to 04.00 pm daily.
