If you want to eat the real thing in Kyoto, this is Honke Tankuma Honten. At this restaurant where the chef adds a new essence based on traditional tea kaiseki, we had seasonal ayu salt-grilled and seafood dishes and the famous sappon hot pot. Summer is over as the elaborate preparation permeates your mouth. I enjoyed the meal quietly so that the Kamo River below could flow slowly.

We made our reservation this morning and got the seats for dinner with a set of 15,000 per person, including 7-8 dishes. This place is run by a family for 90 years, the family is very friendly to foriegners, and polite as japanese always do. Food was very traditional and full of surprises. Come here at sunset so you'll see both the evening and night view. Have yebisu beer or a wide variety of sake then just chill.

When I went to Kyoto, I had a Halal Ozaki beef course at this restaurant. As this restaurant was Michelin 2 stars, we expected very much. Everything was as expected and impressed with the overwhelming taste and quality. The atmosphere of the restaurant and the friendly reception were wonderful and we had a great time. When I come to Kyoto, I want to come again. Thank you for the best presentation.

As a person from chinese decendant I’m used to turtle dishes yet Tankuma’s turtle soup by far was the most delicious I’ve ever had. I came solo and was seated in a private room. Kind of making me feel lonely. I prefer counter seatings when dining alone. I don’t know whether this establishment has one or not. Beautiful ikebana in the corner and a window to small clear river in front of the restaurant add calming atmosphere. Other highlight was tofu dish in bowl made of kombu(?) and sashimi slices. Very refreshing. The propietress came and greet during the end of the meal while presenting gift to carry home. Overall it was a pleasant kaiseki experience. I was hoping to come back, this time with other guests.
