When you’re alone, it’s absolutely peaceful. Enjoy the silence and think of what friend and foe suffered here.

Humbling experience in a tranquil setting , lovely for a picnic and reflection on life

Hugely evocative, if you walk around the outside footpath you can see the raised lip of the crater and see how much of a scar it is on the landscape, you can also see\ta bunker on one of the corners. Looking to the north, you can trace where other craters lie only a few hundred yards away and it brings to you the enormity of the explosions and the horror that the soldiers must have experienced. The pool itself is anachronistic to the cause of its creation - a calm and serene pond sheltered by trees, and totally peaceful.

It has a very interesting history being one of 18 high explosive mines detox dated during the Messines Offensive during WW1. It was bought and gifted to Tabot House, I'm not going into all the detail here but please Google it for the full story. It is now a large water filled hole very high up offering views over the old battlefields. It's a wonderful tranquil spot to stop and take in, it's also free.

Preservation of a crater from the Great War in this way is a wonderful idea. Meditative and beautiful, the area and site are gorgeous and makes you feel the wingspan of history.

We visited on a perfect day, sunny and without a breath of wind and the place really was peaceful. It is difficult to imagine the horror and violence of its creation but spend a moment in quiet reflection of all those who died or were maimed here. The nearby Lone Tree Cemetery is also a sobering place and one of the smaller cemeteries. The entrance to the Pool is opposite the path to the cemetery. Confusingly, there is also a path around the wood containing the crater. By all means walk around it, we did, but the entrance is on the road.
