I don’t understand why it takes 2 months for SERS to get your pension started. If you tell them two months ahead of retirement date there is no reason for that delay. People retiring from the military retire the 1st of one month...the 1st of the next month they get their pension.

They are forcing people into retirement date funds. This is due to the PA State Retirement Board, but no one knows who heads it. That’s shady. It’s your money, you should have a right on where you want it, not where they want. And who heads the Board they should know also.

Miraculously, when you call SERS anytime of day, all their counselors are busy. Noone is available to take your call. Prepare yourself to leave a message and wait. However, at PSERS, where I was an auditor, we always had a call center open to answer your call.

My most recent experience was mostly positive. The automated answering system is somewhat cumbersome, and I can see how my fellow geezers could find it daunting. But I was called back promptly and the folks I’ve talked to were professional, courteous and knowledgeable.
