Quite a long wait if you get there after 11 but worth the wait if you enjoy rice. The main dish here is the amazing rice (with the crispy bottom rice) the side dishes aren't bad either and go really well together with the rice. English menu provided.

Tempura was fantastic. Fish was a bit dry though. Nice sashimi and rice. Ask for the second bowl of rice and add the sesame seeds with salt.

This traditional restaurant, is just opposite the Yasaka Shrine. A long queue before the shop opened for business. To save time, menus were handed out and with orders taken. Very efficient way! Beautiful interior decor and I was fortunate to be seated at the first floor...with the best view, facing the road and Yasaka Shrine. My food was delicious, fantastic and definitely worth all the effort and wait! A big thumps UP to the set esp the crusty, aromatic rice and surprisingly, all at a very affordable pricing too. Loved this food experience.

The side dishes were ordinary, but the rice was one of the best in Japan. Reservation is required for lunch and dinner.

Pros: lunch price (around 2000yen per person), free rice refill (though one bowl is filling enough), not touristy with lots of locals Cons: portion size (5 slices of fish for the sashimi set), rice was just ok to our Malaysian palate (we are used to rice being fragrant and with a larger grain) - it was just stickier than normal Japanese rice but taste the same to us. Getting in was an adventure in itself. First day we put our name in at 10.30am. came back at 10.50 to queue. Didn't make it in the first batch so we left to get snacks. At 11.15am the guy was already out and our name were already crossed out. So we came back the second day. 10am to enter our name. Back at 10.50am to queue. We stood outside the sidewalk with a line of people until 11.40am before being let inside. Definitely not worth the trouble for subpar food. Clearly the locals are able to appreciate their famous rice since they are happy to wait.
