Beautiful historical place located at the centre of the győr. You can reach to old town easily. You can also visit the tower that is very close to this beautiful basilica.

The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary In Győr, Hungary, the Episcopal Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Győr. The appearance is dominated by the classicist west facade with a small, white tower. It was redesigned from 1803 to 1823 by Jakob Hedler. The ceiling frescoes and the altarpiece depicting the Assumption of Mary are masterpieces by Franz Anton Maulbertsch and were created between 1772 and 1781. The ceiling frescoes depict Assumption of Mary (main nave) and Transfiguration of Christ (northern aisle) as well as scenes from the life of St. Stephen (southern aisle). Side altar with the revered image of Mary An attraction is the altar in the northern aisle with a picture showing Mary with the Christ Child. Because of him, pilgrims come to Győr, they adore it as a miraculous image. The picture is taken from the cathedral of the Diocese of Clonfert in Ireland. When, after the conquest of Ireland by Oliver Cromwell in 1649, the persecution of Catholics began, the destruction of the equipment of the Catholic churches began. Walter Lynch, bishop of Clonfert since 1647, managed to smuggle the image out of the country. He was arrested but was able to escape in 1652. In exile in Vienna, he met the Bishop of Győr, János Püsky, who in 1655 invited his brother Walter Lynch to Győr. He had brought the precious picture with him. 1663 Bishop Lynch died; on the deathbed he gave the picture to the diocese of Győr. Since then it is located in the cathedral.
