We spent about 3 hours here, two adults and two kids (5 and 8) and especially the adults could have easily spent more time. We walked around by ourselves and enjoyed that most descriptions and texts had English translations. Took the guided train tour ( in English) into the mine, which was a hit. There's also areas available to enjoy picnic lunches, even though there's also a cafe on the premises.

Great experience. I can only recommend the the guided tour (joint Fire and Water: The Roeder Gallery)!

The museum is very large and it has a lot to see, but not all parts are open at 9am. Part of the museum is firstly open at 12:00, not sure if it’s due to special events or just normal. And the full experience with guided tour to the mines comes with extra cost, long waiting time and better advanced reservation. We arrived at 9 am, the earliest English tour was first at 1pm. Therefore I only give this a 3 stars.

It was really cool to see the whole plant and get into the old mines with a tour. But the website is very unclear about what the tours are. We booked a behind the scenes, because we thought it would take us to special places. Well, the modernday workshop, that’s about it... we booked another tour to actually get into the mines, this was cool. Going through the tunnels and seeing the waterworks of the mines. Both tours though were in German and like everything here people don’t even ask whether you are able to understand. Halfway through the second tour we seemed to understand I was struggling to keep up and translate whatever I could understand (about 30%). We spend 40 which seems an awful lot for 2 tours full of ignorance.. so 1 star for the mines 1 star for the ‘effort’. Definitely a no go if you’re not fluent in German.
