Super friendly service, great food. Central, but a bit away from the crowd. Ask about the rooftop terrace that sort of belongs to this place, it's also pretty cool. P.S. Would be nice to get a small digestive drink from the house though

O Calhau really stands out from the many restaurants in Funchal centre, offering a small but focused selection of dishes, cooked in surprisingly good quality with nice basic ingredients and a good presentation. The service is very attentive and friendly and the restaurant has a somewhat more modern style. Try the tuna on hot stone, it comes with grilled vegetables and potatoes and tastes amazing.
Not bad for a quick bite. Some local specialties but overwhelmingly international fare. The steak sandwich on the local garlic bread is quite good and, although advertised as \tapas\ is actually a light meal.
Very tasty curry rice
No real 'tapas' on the menu, but bruscetta (they call them tapas?!). Too expensive for the quality (we have already eaten much better on the island - especially the octopus). Service politely, but can't suggest a real specialty of the house. Toilets okay (for portuguese conditions). Overall okay but that's about it.
Grilled tuna and peppers absolutely wonderful.
Little place tucked behind the Cathedral in Funchal. Good service and delicious food.
