Like all the Cemeteries on the Somme it's deeply moving stepping in and walking around them. Fricourt is one of two German burial sites on the Somme. Of the 17,000 burials, there are also 14 graves for Jewish soldiers, marked with a headstone instead of a cross. The Red Baron was once buried here before being moved back to Berlin and them to a family plot.

Nice and peaceful place to remember the fallen from all nationality. Very poignant. Remembrance ceremony held every 1st of july at the end of the afternoon.
Very moving. I heard somewhere that the German markers are black, so as to signify shame. Our tour guide took us there but said that many of her tours specifically request to avoid anything to do with German cemeteries. Still very emotional 100 years later.

Dans ce cimetière aux croix de fer peintes en noir reposent 17027 soldats allemands. La dépouille du célèbre aviateur allemand \Le Baron rouge\, Manfred von Richthofen, a été inhumée ici de 1920 à 1925. Les stèles qui remplacent les croix de fers sont celles des combattants israélites.
Le cimetière militaire allemand de Fricourt regroupe les tombes de différents lieux. Il contient 17 027 corps et 11 970 dans 4 ossuaires. Il est, par le nombre de morts, le second cimetière allemand de la Somme après celui de Vermandovillers. Le Baron Rouge, Manfred von Richthofen (1892-1918), as de l‘aviation allemande aux 80 victoires, abattu en vol le 21 avril 1918 au-dessus de Vaux-sur-Somme, fut d‘abord inhumé à Bertangles et puis de 1919 à 1925 à Fricourt. Sa dépouille fut transférée en Allemagne à la demande de sa famille.
