I was very happy with this tour. My wife (Brazilian) and I (American) did a private tour at 11 am. We were picked up at our hotel, and transported via cab (set up by the guide) to the favela As my Portuguese is not great, the guide, Alberto, spoke in English the entire time. He lives in the favela, and narrated the trip to the favela and through it the entire time. I felt that the private tour allowed us to do more than a group tour, as we took alleyways a few times. The whole tour I felt very safe, and it was very obvious Alberto had good standing in the community. We learned a lot and I have a much better understanding of this misunderstood community.
Nice tour of the Favela and spectacular views of the city from the mountain. Definitely enough time and walking to explore the favela transportation was provided from Ipanema. Although it is pacified and the locals in the favela will not mess with you and appreciate the business you bring it is still a favela with a lot of poverty so it may not be for the faint of heart. Tour guide was from there and very knowledgeable and made sure everyone was accounted for and doing good.
What a shame that so many people miss this because they are afraid. We are in our late 50's and felt completely safe all the time. It is a whole different culture and way of life. Please don't miss this integral part of Rio!
When i went to Rio de Janeiro i always thought about going to the favela - but i was honestly a bit scared of it. In the Hostel they told me about the favela walking tour and how great it was. So i went - and i would go thousand times again. The people in the favelas were very kind and it was their pleasure to show us their products (clothes,drinks,bred and more) which was amazing. Thank you for the very safe and interesting tour :-)
We took two tours with this group. First we did the Samba tour and then we did the Favela tour. Both were fantastic! Not only were both tours interesting and fun, but each of the guides were knowledgable, flexible, and fun. I easily recommend this group! I will also add that they also helped us with transport to places they themselves did not do. Fantastic service!
Favela Tour is a excellent thing to make to get know the everyday life of a common Brasilian from favelas. I could literally look inside of people's flats, talk to them on streets, walk by them etc. We had also a youmg girl from Rocinha who helped the guide out - we could pose her any question we wanted to. Anyway, an eyes opening tour.
Just like christ the redeemer I think if you go to rio you have to go to favela just to see how the locals live. It's just like any place with alot of people working everyday. Yes it is dangerous but I'd you're with a tour guide you are fine. Just make sure you don't take pics of locals or try to take pics without given the ok. I did this tour today and was very happy I did it.
