The mortar provided by Eco-Readymix did not meet standards for suitable cement types for a designation iii mortar as required by NHBC standards (Maximum GGBS content 35%) in 2015. Their mortar included 50% GGBS cement replacement (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag). The advice from an NHBC structural engineer is that the 35% limit is because the use of GGBS in mortar is not backed by research (Unlike concrete). It is therefore entirely incumbent on mortar suppliers to provide evidence of the durability of their product (at the present time there is no international agreed method to do this - other than historical use and understanding of Portland Cement mix ratios). Lab tests previously used for Portland cement do not provide a reliable or representative test for in-situe performance high GGBS mortars; since GGBS requires much longer hydration periods and the %RH of the lab tests are unrepresentative of site conditions (absorption from between dry bricks and air evaporation). The mortar on my property is weak, friable and eroding. Expert advice has revealed that this is because incomplete hydration of the GGBS within the mortar. The mortar has a high void content, is moderately weak and friable. This has been confirmed by the incomplete hydration of the GGBS shown in the petrographic analysis images. Large quantities of GGBS are used in concrete, but it is well known (particularly high cement replacement) concrete requires special curing arrangements. My advice would be avoid this product (and anything from elsewhere with similar levels of GGBS) as it could potentially result in an increased level of claims.
