My wife's water broke at 6:30 am, and our baby was breech. We arrived at Duke at 8:00 am because we were coming from Raleigh, and ran into rush hour traffic. Our daughter was born at 8:30 am, butt first. The doctors and nurses who delivered her were absolutely AMAZING (especially Dr Jennifer Gilbert, MD) and I will forever be grateful to them for the miracle they pulled off that morning. Honestly, every doctor that we encountered there was wonderful. They took the time to explain to us in detail how our situation would be handled, and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that all of our needs were met, and that our child given the best care a parent could ask for. That being said, the nursing staff was another story. Many of them came across as rude, and acted as though they knew more than the doctors. We went to a fire station that specializes in child car seat safety before taking our daughter home, and had our car seat installed by them. When it came time for her to go home, one nurse told us that it was done completely wrong, and changed it so that my daughter almost could not breathe. So long story short, the doctors here are some of the best in the country, whom I would highly recommend. As for the nursing staff, not so much.

Amazing staff and wonderful experience! Went in on Wednesday and gave birth on Thursday. Loved our nurse Caitlin, she is so sweet and was right there when we needed her, and made me feel so much better when I was in pain. She is an amazing nurse! All the nurses were amazing! They kept an eye on us and made everything so much less stressful. Baby Raven, Mike, and I really appreciate them so much! Loved that before we left the hospital staff would make sure we were ready to go and touch base with me on my health and set up a home visit before my doctors appointment. Overall, I really have to say that if I have another baby I will be going back here. :)

Fantastic staff, especially Dana and Chris in Child Delivery. Empathy, patience and precision. Hands-down the greatest institution in the country for birthing, could not be more pleased with their unrelenting commitment to ensuring the health and happiness of my wife and child throughout all phases of the process. These guys and girls are warriors, courageous and always bring their game face. Living angels. Forever grateful! -T

Anesthesiology was wonderful and very helpful with medication suggestions during emergency c-section. Nursing staff was also fantastic and very attentive throughout numerous periods with baby in distress. Specific midwife was not on the same page as the doctors/nursing team. In retrospect, I wish I had requested to not have the midwife involved in my care. She shamed me for wanting an epidural despite the doctor recommending it because of my c-section risk. I would absolutely never allow her in the room for any subsequent births. She created a lot of unnecessary confusion - she would tell me I needed to get up and move when nursing told me I needed continuous fetal monitoring. My spouse almost missed the delivery. If I had not asked on the operating table I would’ve been alone for the experience. Attending was not confident during a stressful situation and created a lot more anxiety during a difficult birth.
