San Sebastián has many landmarks but this is the most modern one and one that has transformed the city. Its incredible from the outside and inside it has an awesome auditorium.

The Great Kursaal was an elegant palace built in 1921, pulled down in 1973. An empty plot was freed (1973-1999). The new Kursaal Congress Centre (1999) was designed by Rafael Moneo, awarded the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture in 2001. The initial impact of the buildings in the landscape was deemed negative by Donostians, thanks to the positive impact it had in the economy, tourism and cultural life, most citizens today appreciate it.

Actually I stayed here one night to watch the opera “Fidelio” of the BBC Philharmonic. The whole opera was excellent!
It is in a great location and is now part of the Donosti landscape. When I first saw it 18 years ago I thought it resembled a large misshapen plastic packaging container spoiling the image of the beach. But it's grown on me with time.
