With links to the University of Newcastle in several ways, including interactions with Northeast Universities Medicinal Plant Research Group (MPRG), educational visits from North East university medical students, groups from other university departments. As well as taking interactive educational visits from schools, college and other groups, Dilston has research links to Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and other research bodies and is running a second clinical trial testing plants for memory. Science Garden This physic garden has its origins in neuroscience.  Created by a professor of neurochemistry at the University of Newcastle and developed by a pharmacognosist (study of the science of plant medicine) specialising in aromatic plants for memory and the brain. Dilston has a focus on plants shown by science to be active in the brain and on brain protective preventative medicine.  Dilston Physic Garden is grounded in science and testing the efficacy of traditional medicine and embraces sound evidence from a multidisciplinary and trans-boundary perspective. Dilston began in the 1990’s because of the team’s pioneering scientific research showing that plants used historically to boost memory, like European sage, are shown to clinically boost memory memory. To take part in our next clinical trial for memory email [email protected] – our last pilot trial showed those under 63 years, who took the plant medicine, improved in their word recall by over 50% compared to those who didn’t take it. Plants for Health One of the ideas behind why this physic garden exists is to help bridge the gap between traditional, so called complementary or alternative medicine. Modern science is now providing the evidence to help do this.  Scientific research from round the globe show that herbs – the word is synonymous with plant medicine, botanical medicine and medical botany – will become established, as they were in the past, as essential components in human health, development and medicine.  You only have to look at the hundreds of body boosting bioactive chemical components in each plant to realise the potential out there. Why have we forgotten this knowledge! Discover what plants can do for health and medicine with the UK’s first 10-day Foundation in Plant Medicine discovery course over 4 seasonal weekends. Visit our Dilston Dispensary of Plant Medicine in the summer to find out more about plant medicine tailored for your needs – an essential component of treating conditions. Specialist Interest A focus at Dilston is plants for the brain. You will find special collections of plants shown by science to be effective in controlled clinical trials, and some as effective as conventional drugs. Find Blues Busters (for depression), Chill Pills (for anxiety), Memory Matters (for attention and memory), The Senses (for pain) and Sweet Dreams (for insomnia). We also have other collections such as Magic & Medicine, Culinary Medicine, Heart & Mind, Flower Power, Botanic Bliss and Opium Den collections.
