Bhai Somaji was a petty vendor selling boiled black gram to sustain his family. When Hari Mandir Saheb of Amritsar was being constructed by Guru Ram Dasji, 4th Guru of Sikhs, one day, he went to Bhai Soma ji and asked for some money for the temple. He donated all his day's collection to him and it continued for four days. On the fifth day, Guru Ram Dasji took him to the congregation and explained how he gave away all his day's earnings for the temple, unmindful of his family. Hence, he blessed him with the title of 'Shah' and called him Soma Shah Beparvah. With Guru's blessings, from a petty vendor Soma Shahji became one of the richest persons of Amritsar with the passage of time. Shahji said that as they are not aware of the exact date when Guru Ram Dasji blessed their ancestors with the title of Shah', they commemorate it on the last Sunday of March every year, which is known as Bakshish Smagam'. Bakshish means to have blessings of God.
