. Cadiz has many, very many, handsome buildings. Built at a time when the sea trade with Europe and particularly with the Americas, North and South, was flourishing, bringing in vast fortunes, these buildings are meant to illustrate to the world and his wife that Cadiz is a great city, a city of wealth and culture. And no building in Cadiz illustrates this better than the Ayuntamiento, the Town Hall, the official seat of the Town Council and the Mayor. Started in 1799 it was built in several stages, being finally completed in 1861. It stands in the Plaza de San Juan de Dios, looking towards the port from which came its wealth. There is a line of fountains leading up to it through the Plaza - gorgeous! A magnificent building from the outside, if you have (or pretend to have) business with the municipal offices, you can go inside and see that its administrative functions have not overcome its internal magnificence, with gracious stairways and impressive chambers for council meetings. .
