Very concerning hygiene practices in covid times & inconsistent quality. Their flippant attitude towards hygiene feedback is a major cause for concern. My visit today, we asked for and were handed paper menus that were clearly reuse more than once with stains and previous orders marked with pencil then erased. This is not only unhygienic with using old and uncleaned menus but also all the servers touching the menus and then handling your food is problematic. When I spoke with the staff of my concern, this was how it went (Not verbatim). Me, I don’t think this is safe, hygienic, and worse, the public perception is not good. Server, reusing paper is better for the environment. And we leave it for a week before we use it again to be sanitary. Me, You've erased previous peoples order, don't check if there are stains on the menus, how can we trust that you to have left it for 7 days? Server, well other high class restaurants I've been to are also reusing their paper menus. Me, Their practice doesn't have any bearing on your practice here. If you wanted to save the environment just laminate the menus and give people dry erase pens. Server, yeah but then we would have to wipe it off every time? ERASING AND REUSING PAPER MENUS AFTER A WEEK IS EASIER. Me, IS THAT SO DIFFICULT? Don’t you wipe the tables? Don’t you clean the dishes? Server, clearly we have our differences in the way we see things.... We used to be relatively regular at this restaurant. You screwed up our order last time two weeks (undercooked chicken and unsalted dish, which at least they took seriously and spoke to the kitchen) and then this? Nope, not going back.
I agree with the other reviewers, ever since the pandemic the quality has been a bit inconsistent. Although I think their menu is tastier than coquitlam coppa cafe, I find it a bit concerning that my fried rice was stained pink by the bbq pork (perhaps too much red dye on the meat). We ordered take out and saw a pink spotted fried rice. We didn't pick it up late or leave it in the box for hours. We have also ordered fried rice with bbq pork in almost every chinese restaurant in coquitlam, and never have I have seen the rice being stained pink. Great plus is that there is plenty of parking, service is efficient and they have huge portions.
Poor service and food quality is not steady. Ordered a noodle dish that uses a specific type of noodles (油麵) but gave us udon noodles instead. We told them this is not what we ordered, manager told us many restaurants do this ‘swap’ - not true. If you don’t have the right ingredients, don’t put it on the menu! Worse of all, we asked them to not serve peanuts, as we have someone with peanut allergy at our table, with a dish (it was literally just sprinkle peanuts on the side at the end, and not cooking with peanuts) and they did not care and the dish came with peanuts, we asked them about it, we were told to simple ‘take if off off ourselves’ We would not go back.
Opps a few days late posting my review! This is my 3rd time eating at M cafe, this time for dinner! Both 1st and 2nd time, I was impressed by their HK style breakfasts especially since they have viet coffee as a drink option! If they weren't out in Coquitlam, I would go here more often for HK food. They're better than the hk cafes in Vancouver and Richmond. What I like about M Cafe is that you can customize almost every dish (pick meat, pick carb, pick sauce etc.) and you can select small or large size. The reveiw: A) Malaysian curry beef brisket. Flavour was on the saltier side but flavourful. Don't choose fried rice as a carb it wasn't good because it's pre-made *bleh*. Stick with regular rice! Portion wise it's not as big as the pork chop dish but they give you decent amount of beef (not like other Chinese restaurants where 50% of the dish contains big chunks of potatoes). B) Baked Portuguese sauce pork chop cutlet on fettuccine! I was a little worried picking fettuccine over linguine but it turned out great! Portuguese sauce was delicious; probably one of the best I've had! And the pork chop cutlet was crispy, not fatty, and MASSIVE (then again we did order large size)! Highly recommend ordering their baked dishes!!!!! Lastly, you can save 10% off your bill if you use the app to order online. Tong Tong says, \I'll be back.
