Great cheap cafe that is always so busy, they do the best pie peas and gravy ever, they sell cakes, coffee and butties too. Cheap and cheerful and always happy staff chatting away to locals. Great place to stop for a quick lunch or just to sit and have a coffee and watch the world go by.

Although it can be nerve-wracking entering this 1970s time-warp café for the first time (especially if you don't look local and of a certain age), don't be shy: it's clean, friendly, not too expensive. The food is excellent of its kind and satisfying in an old-fashioned way. I love the old black plastic menu board on the wall with push-on white lettering, rarely seen since my childhood. Come here for: pie and peas, perfect jacket potatoes, sandwiches, cakes, excellent fruit tart and a cup of tea. Don't come here for: coffee (unless you like weak instant coffee). Counter service, cash only. Expect a short queue at lunchtime, especially Saturdays. Update Oct 2020. Now takes card payment.
Highly recommend....fresh home made food, quality! Pie n peas with gravy to die for! Plate salads are amazing too as is everything. Worth a look. Friendly staff.
Old fashioned cafe when you go in but absolutely spot on in every way and the food is very good and friendly staff they have also got very good safety measures in place in these tough times
I've been coming here for probably 30 years and I always get Pie, peas and gravy as a main, I might get other things with but it's always Pie, peas and gravy. Every time I get this it's as good as the first time, I can't say that about anywhere else that I've been for food, it's in a class of its own. It has never changed the decor in decades - it doesn't need to!
