The thicker stone allows for greater design flexibility, and substantially reduces the likelihood of breakage. You inspect your stone slab prior to cutting: + Unlike many other stone suppliers, our customers don’t have to special order their slabs, sight unseen. They don’t have to order from a sample… and then have to take what comes. We offer a huge inventory of stone at our Calgary store; stocked and ready for viewing and approval. Choosing your stone directly on-site, rather than from a sample, means you’ll get exactly the stone you want. You also choose here at the same location rather then having to make a separate trip to another distributor. We diamond polish front profile edges to ensure a permanent shine that matches the slab face: + We take the time to wet-polish the finished profile edges with successively finer grit diamond pads, providing a durable shine to the edges that matches the polished surface the slab has from the factory. Some shops will wax rather than polish, with the polish the shine does not wear off. We polish out machining ridges by hand: + Our high-tech CNC machines finish the countertop edges perfectly straight and even, but leave fine machining lines on the profile; we take the time to polish these lines out ‘by hand’. Many suppliers do not take care of this detail. We provide the strongest under-mount sink reinforcement around: + We install a stainless steel bar insert into the stone, along the vulnerable front kitchen sink edge. We also install a wire cradle under the sink itself (where cabinet and sink design allow), to add support for the sink, which becomes heavy when filled. Our skilled tradesmen do all the manufacturing and installation work: + We don’t use subcontractors; we prefer to have our people do the work, utilizing consistent methods that meet our high standards. We train our tradesmen to follow ‘best practices’, and we guarantee our service and installation work. It is acid, heat, stain and scratch resistant making it an excellent countertop surface. Granite is dense, heavy and hard, giving it strength and long-lasting qualities. Granite is also heat and stain resistant. Granite comes in a wide variety of colours and patterns. Natural quartzite has less patterning and texture than granite and looks more like marbles. For durability and practicality it is equal to granite. MARBLE (& TRAVERTINE & LIMESTONE) Marble and travertine are unique and beautiful natural stones characterized by veining. They are sedimentary rocks. Travertine has holes in the stone which are filled by cementious grout and/or resin, and this gives the stone a special character. Limestone is characterized by fossils. These types of stone are sensitive to anything acidic and therefore are not recommended for countertop use. SOAPSTONE Soapstone is a metamorphic rock, composed largely of talc, which gives it the soapy feel. It is very dense and inert to acids and alkalis, making it a good counter surface. Though it scratches easily, it is considered a wearable surface. The scratches become quickly invisible with oiling. It can also be lightly sanded with 80-grade sandpaper. Soapstone is usually grey in colour, with some spots and patterning and occasional light or dark veins. It is recommended for countertops in any area, custom sinks, indoor or outdoor, or for fireplaces, boxes as well as facades. + Read more about soapstone at Wikipedia, click here. QUARTZ (ENGINEERED) Quartz is a man-made solid surface product comprised of over 90% ground natural quartzite mixed in an epoxy resin base and poured into molds to form slabs. There are numerous brand names, all virtually indistinguishable in terms of performance. Each brand has their own colour line. Dauter Stone carries Silestone and many other brands such as Caesarstone, Vicostone, Hanstone, LG, Geos and others can be special ordered. Engineered quartz is consistent in colouration and textural variations throughout each slab. It is therefore popular for decorating schemes where a plain, untextured surface is desired. It is suitable for indoor use as a countertop in any home area. PORCELAIN SLAB Porcelain slab is the latest product available in slabs for countertops. It is a man-made but does not contain the resin component that engineered quartzes do. It contains porcelain and glass, fused in a unique process called “sinterizing”. It is heat resistance, UV resistant (less porous) and and generally harder then engineered quartz. It can be used for the countertop in any area of the home as well as outdoor applications.
