I have had a Co-operative bank account for many years - since the 80's. I joined because I believe in the co-operative movement and the ethics of the bank. First they close banks near to me - Mansfield, hardly a village - then they restrict hours on some spurious pretext of conformity with UK govt guidelines. Whilst in Chesterfield on other business I took a few hundred pounds worth of bagged change into the branch. I was told that I should not be there as I was spreading Covid. How could I be 'spreading' something I don't have? No matter. I was then told that the bank (devoid of customers) was only open for urgent matters and this wasn't one of them. When, in turn, I asked what urgent matters, apart from paying in or withdrawing actual cash couldn't be done online or by phone I was met with the same suggestion, vis that I shouldn't be outside and was spreading Covid. I am likely to be looking for another bank - I already have a French account with a British presence and may shift my business there - however the nest of the dragon may exist only in Chesterfield

Nice staff , but rubbish opening hours for people that work full time as they’ve cut it way down , can’t even pop in Saturday mornings if needs be now. Not everything can be done online! Even if one day a week open later or at Saturday morning like before!

I recently lost my partner very suddenly at the age of 53, and it would have been his birthday today, 22 May. I went into the branch office at Chesterfield to register his death and I was told I would need to make an appointment. I appreciate that fact, but the lack of consideration shown by the staff was deplorable. Not one sign of professionalism or empathy was shown. I am utterly disgusted and would never recommend this Bank, which is disappointing in view of the fact that I shop regularly at the Co-op store on Elder Way

My partner applied for a Co-op current-account on-line and was informed the application was approved. However, when we went to the Chesterfield branch to provide identity documents, we were informed that the application had been declined and were given no reason. Our issue wasn't with this per se, but with the unhelpful and arrogant manner of the surly matriarch who dealt with our enquiry, demonstrating no customer service skills whatsoever. We went around the corner to Barclays and were able to open a current account on the spot, no problem!

Why go to just a number bank when you can have a bank that still cares about you.
