Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre, Campbell Dr, Barrow Hill, Chesterfield S43 2PR, England was an operational former Midland Railway roundhouse until 1948. Some years after closure, the building was Grade II listed by the Department of the Environment in 1991. Following negotiations with the British Railways Property Board, Chesterfield Borough Council became the new owners of the shed and nearby yard in 1996. The site was refurbished and reopened to the public in July 1998 as as a railway heritage centre and the home to many preserved British railway locomotives. They've also created a secondary revenue-stream for themselves through hiring out the venue for beer festivals and music events.

If you like your locomotives close up this is a great place to be! There is a good selection of engines on display including steam, diesel and electric both inside in the historic roundhouse and outside in the yard. As well as the preserved stock there are always a good number of \stored\ locomotives on site. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and always keen to talk to young and old about the engines and the ongoing restorations. Definitely worth a visit.

Genuinely impressed by the friendly staff and the efforts that have been made here to make this accessible while they work to preserve so many trains. The roundhouse itself is an impressive structure and a great place to see the trains, and then there are loads more parked up outside with a good viewing platform. Well worth a visit, and we went on a non-event day, so I imagine much better then.

A great little hidden gem this one. Very easy to miss so keep an eye out. A very welcoming place with a great little cafe and some marvelous exhibits. Great displays tell the history of the place and there is plenty of \hands on\ stuff for kids too. The staff there really have a passion for the trains and it shows. This place holds beer festivals and such at different times of the year so keep an eye out for them. There is potential for this place to have even more and be bigger than it is. Well worth a visit. Ch ch ch choose Barrowhouse for your next day out.

Lively afternoon out. The children loved the trains and it was good value for money. The cafe food was yummy too!
