Parking and then finding a way into the capitol was not fun. Many entrances were closed to construction or security when we visited. Finally inside, we join a tour group already started. I've seen many incredible capitols (Mississippi for example) and WV just rubbed me the wrong way. It's the 5th(?) capitol built in WV and very, very \high-end\ with imported crystal chandeliers from the Czech republic and millions of dollars worth of marble. For all that it feels like an empty grand ballroom, more functional than lovely. A very expensive monument for a part-time legislature.

I loved this place. For years we drove by on I64 and would comment on the 'golden dome' of the state capitol but this was the first time we stopped there. as it turns out, this has to be one of the easiest and best get off/get on an Interstate I have encountered anywhere. The city parallels the Interstate and is only several blocks deep, so literally it's about the same amount of effort as driving through one of the Rest Areas along the Interstate - but with the full amenities that a state capitol city has to offer. And not only that, but the prices in WV are a fraction of what you will find in neighboring states making a best value as well. The capitol complex is spectacular. The state capitol in WV was moved at least five times as I recall, and the current structure built over 9 years with completion in the early 30s at a cost of just under 10 million which was a lot for those days. Current estimated replacement value is aver 450 million, and it's just stunning, and I have seen a lot of state as well as our federal capitol buildings.. They certainly got alot for their money as well. We went on one of the tours, which is free, and recommend that you do this if available. We then spent several hours looking through the capitol building but could easily have spent many more hours. I'll let the photos attached speak for themselves. And in case anyone is wondering, the WV people running the state affairs at the place were just wonderful. Super friendly, very helpful, wonderful people in all respects, and I won't hesitate to say that they were some of the friendliest folks I have met anywhere. You will enjoy your visit. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I visited on a Saturday, so parking was easy and there weren't a lot of people around. The building is very nice, but the rotunda was off-limits due to some construction.

Beautiful building and grounds. Make sure your camera battery is full and your memory card is empty, a lot of great photos to take here. Don't stop at the outside, spend a few minutes inside as well and tour the Governor's Residence if able.

Marble EVERYWHERE! Very beautiful building built in the 1920's. Full of West Virginia State history. There are elevators and many steps! Huge place, I never saw all of it.
