Abbaye aux Dames as it's known is one of the oldest churches in France founded by William I the Conquerer build in Romanesque style. His wife Queen Matilda of Flanders (1031–1083) is buried in the church.
Small quiet abbey, we had the luck it was empty when we came in, so could discover it in private and silence.
Really nice and calm place
Really great, but would be nice if they protected Mathilde's marker with non reflective glass
Founded around 1060 by Matilda of Flanders, William the Bastard's spouse, the Abbaye-aux-Dames (Women's Abbey) was consecrated on 18th June 1066 and dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
The Abbey of the Holy Trinity, was founded as a Benedictine monastery in the late 11th century, by Guilherme The Conqueror and his wife Matilde de Flandres. Matilde died in 1083 and is buried in the choir under a black marble block. The original towers were destroyed during the 100-year war, and replaced by balustrades outside the original architecture in the 18th century. Visit the Abbey of Damas when you are in Caen!
Love coming here and seeing the change of exhibitions. Always so peaceful.
