When in the middle of a family storm, logic and reasoning can sometimes elude us. Judgment is clouded by pain and often harsh and hurtful words are exchanged that limit opportunities for open, honest and constructive communication. Mediation provides a safe and supportive space for families in crisis to have the difficult conversations needed to resolve their conflict. The mediator, who is a neutral party trained in conflict resolution, helps people to gain a better understanding of the issues, needs and interests of all concerned, focus on the specifics and discover the best way forward to concrete resolutions. As a mediator, I help guide and facilitate conversations with a forward-looking focus that avoids the mire of old issues. I believe that the most valuable role that I can play is to empower people to own the process of resolving their conflict. Because their needs and interests are unique to them, they are the ones who are best equipped to craft solutions that work for themselves and their families.
