A refreshing view on strategy and organisational development. The past few years many organisations are faced with issues that seem too big and complex to handle. Issues that are rooted in deeply embedded patterns. The issues often involve a multitude of parties and individuals. Those involved often have different or even competing views on the nature of the issue and the conditions of the solution. Opinions on how to handle these issues therefore vary greatly. Simultaneously, a viciously changing environment impacts the process, making the problem a ‘moving target’. The question ‘where to start’ is often difficult to answer. The default way of solving problems by means of projects no longer fits with these kinds of issues. The step-by-step method of first creating a shared and objectified view on the issue, chopping it into ‘manageable’ pieces and then work with the involved parties on alternatives and (partial) solutions and make decisions based on shared and agreed-upon criteria, no longer works. The complexity is too great and there are too many parties involved with too many competing interests. New approaches are needed.
