Had the absolute pleasure of tapping into the mind of Mr. Bill Lott who knows this forest inside and out. So much to absorb. What a treasure - the Forest and Mr. Lott!

Explore the native trees of Georgia at Thompson Mills Forest, the State Arboretum managed by the University of Georgia. While the forest provides teaching and researching opportunities for the university, it offers visitors a network of nature trails under a shady canopy. Call ahead to verify hours of operation and directions to the gated entrance near the fork in New Liberty Church Road. Since 1980 more than 100 species of trees have been added to the 80 native species already present in the forest. Currently the collection includes 90 percent of the native trees of Georgia.

I know next to nothing about trees and care even less, but this place does pull you in & make you interested in looking at the different kinds of trees. You can jut drive in whenever it's open and start gawking at trees for as long as you like, it's usually empty

I'd agree with a previous review, poor signage. We saw a deer as soon as we arrived. As you would expect, a plethora of birds. It's a dendrophile's paradise; maples, oaks, firs, junipers, magnolias, buckeyes, cypress, poplars, mimosas, etc.

Such an amazing treasure! So happy for future generations who will be able to enjoy this heritage of a natural resource. So happy for the wildlife and the environment.
