1st time I've been in for a long time. The male behind the counter was as welcoming as a burnt out fire on a cold winters night. Not very helpful when asked about some of the bizarre notes on the shelf, describing ingredients with spices as opposed to the actual hops etc. Pairing notes suggest the owner likes curries than the beers... Large majority of pairing notes seem to lean towards the customer being a big curry fan. How complex flavoured real ales can be paired with spicy curries is anyone's guess. He seemed to take offence when I mentioned a Scottish brewery and Punk ipa being stocked at Lidl. If Lidl stock it, we don't was the reply. Yet its okay to stock the same beers at a much inflated price as the local coop has. I'm not referring to multi buy deals... Just massively inflated prices on what the coop sell as a single unit. No polite conversation regarding what type of real ale I like, no suggestions. Some. Folk may be happy to be left to their own selections. For a small town shop that has some great specialist and uncommon drinks, I'd expect at least some conversation as you would find in a real ale house. I suppose if you pair your ale with a vast array of curries... Then having a pint & conversation in a pub is a joy that is being missed. Two stars for the selection, three stars short for lack of hospitality and gratitude.
