If you visit Besançon then you must visit the citadel. Vauban built, it is well preserved and actively maintained. Lots of stuff to see and do and there are gelada monkeys.

Impressive citadel with a great view of the city. Would be a lovely cultural site. What I did not expect (yes, having not done even cursory research) was an extremely sad zoo being the main attraction. Animals were in very small cages. Poorly behaved children and poorly behaved adults were knocking on the cages and yelling at the animals, visibly upsetting them. No staff in sight. A depressing experience. Feel bad I paid money to support this. View from the free section is just as good. The historical museums weren't great. Unfortunately the resistance museum, which seems to be considered a highlight, was closed for renovation.

The Citadel of Besançon is such a fabulous place for a day out with its extensive fortifications built in the 17th-century, zoo, aquarium and Museum of the Resistance and Deportation, I guarantee you will enjoy a full and educational day out here, highly recommended, 5 stars.

Great views of the city and the river below from the Citadel of Besancon.

Was super impressed by this place--wasn't at all expecting the zoo and the many mini museums. I came in the last hour, so tickets were only 6. Didn't have time to really check out the exhibits, but loved walking around the old fort. The animals were also too cool--saw many species I hadn't see before. Would highly recommend for people of all ages!

An interesting fort with lots of history and terrific views of the city and the surrounding country side. Be prepared to walk uphill a lot since the citadel is located on a big hill. The musée de la Résistance was disappointing. Although they had English hand guides the majority of the exhibition was old newspaper articles and some photos of the war years.

It has a good view and it is also a touristic centre.
