Small country house opera. Some of the best singers around in a charming unique location.

We have just spent three very enjoyable evenings at Baugé taking in all three productions of this year’s festival: Magic Flute, Il Trovatore and most memorably Alfonso and Estrella by Schubert. Lovely serene garden setting for the interval picnic and the performances, from singers and orchestral players alike were first rate. We are already looking forward to next year’s events.

What's not to like. Fantastic setting. World class opera. The musical director keeps discovering young singers who are snapped by the great opera houses. Lots to do in the surrounding country side.

To withstand an opera performance outside the usual high star system where things often go wrong one must have either a graceful venue or a charming element of some sort. Neither was present here at this attempt at Rigoletto where mimicking Glyndeborn picnics led to ferocious runs to and fro the dusty car park for the best seats and where, above all, the conditions in the huge plastic tent that posed as a theatre were so uncomfortable it made attendance impracticable. Temperature was in the high 30 degree Celsious and the seats were small, hard and too close to each other. The 'international cast' was an array of either has-beens or never-to-be singers whilst the musical direction was way too fast (no doubt to finish as soon as possible and stop their instruments from melting on account of the heat inside the tent). Who needs to go through this to listen to a bunch of cast offs from all the world's proper productions? Not me, that's for sure.

Regarding review by Vincent Miro Of the 10 'has been' solists in our Rigoletto and Idomeneo this year; five perform regularly at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, four in principal solo roles; three perform regularly at the Welsh National Opera, two in principal solo roles; one performs solo roles at the Metropolitan Opera New York; one has a contract for a title role with William Christie this September. One is a recent winner of the Belvedere competition. If Vincent Miro looks at the other reviews here as well as the review by Alain Duault in Opera On Line, he will see what a complete outlier he is. He might also like to note the correct spelling of 'Glyndebourne' and 'Celsius'.

Pour ceux qui aiment l'opéra, manifestation à ne pas manquer. Joli cadre, belle représentation et pique nique sur l'herbe à l'anglaise. Belle réputation méritée
