Amazing urban farm project in the hart of (Molenbeek) Brussels. Located on the roof of the 'Foodmet', a big indoor fresh products market. A part of the surface is used as an outdoor farm where different kinds of vegetables are grown in soil and large flower boxes. Indoors there is an aquaponics installation. In large greenhouses they grow cherry tomatos and herbs. Next to the greenhouses are several large aquariums where they breed some species of bass. The waste products of the fish are then filtered out of the water and given to the plants inside the greenhouse as nutrients (liquid). Most of the water used for this production is harvested from the roof and the circuit itself is pretty 'closed' meaning not a lot of water is lost in the whole plant - fish exchange of nutrients. For the construction they also tried to use sustainable materials like steel, glass, and the roofing membrane which is made out of vegetable oils! (DERBIPURE) For the maintenance and gardening of this project they are working together with local organisations who assist people who have been unemployed for a long time but want to work to find a job. All and all an amazing project to see and experience if you have the chance.
