NextThing was founded in February 2012 during the minor 'Entrepreneurship' (Dutch: 'Minor Ondernemerschap') at the Universtiy of Applied Sciences Amsterdam. During this time a product introduction strategy was developed and the business network was expanded. NextThing won the NIBS Business Plan Competition 2012 in May at London South Bank University and the Folia Startup Award 2012 "publieksprijs" (2nd place) in Amsterdam.
