Splendid! One of English Heritage's free sites. Castle ruins are just on past the characterful little church. Quite spectacular how it is still standing upright with one tower having had drastic surgery to pull it together. Looks like inspiration for Dali's Burning Giraffes, with its metal rods rammed in to hoik it back together. Peaceful surroundings. A small site but nevertheless dramatic and impressive. Worthwhile visiting.

Rugged rural location. Ruins now but you get the feel of what it was like hundreds of years ago in the wilds of Northumberland.
A lovely place to visit not much car parking space
The castle is a remote ruin with all the feeling of history that you would expect. The nearby 11th century church is sadly closed at the present time - but I have visited before and it is so worth a visit. I applaud those involved in the upkeep of both.
Really good place to take young children so they can get a good idea what z castle is in a small scale. Then take them to Alnwick!
