We are not locals but we do have family in the area. We've driven by this place many times but only today decided to try something new and stop in. I only wish we had found this place sooner. It beats the heck out of some of the chain barbecue joints. Allman's has been in this location since 1954. The building looks dated but it has a wonderful old-time type feel to it. They keep the menu limited which is great because they can concentrate on a few items and do them well. The choices are simple: pork, chicken or ribs. Their original, signature sauce, which they've been using since 1954, is vinegar-based. When they decided to start offering ribs that came up with a brown sugar based sauce which is thicker and a bit sweeter. Either sauce is a good choice for the pork. Speaking of the pork, it has a solid flavor and is nice and juicy. The chicken, in my opinion, does not require any sauce. I don't know what they mixed it with but man was it good. Most places have a sauce on the outside of the chicken for roasting but Allman's mixes something in with the pulled chicken. It was so juicy and flavorful. For sides I had onion rings and hush puppies. Both had a nice crunch. I also had coleslaw on the side. It was creamy but not too much and the cabbage was nice and crunchy, very fresh. Next time I want to try the ribs and pork stew, seasonal October to March.

Is this a great place to eat on the quick... yep. The sides are great. The sandwiches are great. If you like big plates, yep. Should you drive an hour or two to eat here due to BBQ pork due to what you may have read/heard... No. This is not BBQ, it is a good pork sandwich or plate of pork but it's not pork BBQ. No wood to be seen, no smoke essence in the meat and no slight addition of spices in the meat. You're just eating pork butts/picnics that has been braised then minced or sliced.

5 stars for speed and the double sizes. The burger itself was fine, but it came out super fast after ordering! The fries were delicious and the mac and cheese is top notch (reminiscent of the best gas station mac and cheese you can imagine). Generous wait staff and fun location! Boyfriend loved the BBQ too

Drove an hour on a Saturday afternoon just for their lunch. Sat outdoors, had an exceptional server and a delicious pork barbecue sandwich with two sides. Been going there for many years and always make an effort to stop there when we can. It's a joint and we love it.
