Alex Shimwell is a highly skilled studio potter and dedicated teacher. I can't recommend highly enough. If you are serious about learning to throw on the wheel - book onto one of his classes asap!

Alex was recommended to me by the amazing Anna Mercedes Wear. I was looking for an inspirational tutor who would have the skill and patience to teach someone with my complete lack of natural ability. I’m now coming to end of my 4th set of courses and could not recommend Alex highly enough. In 6 months he has taken me from a complete beginner to the point where I can realistically start thinking about selling some of my work. This is well beyond my expectations. Alex teaches sound technique based in the science of clay that will scale to throwing bigger. If you want to learn a great throwing technique that will allow you to grow as, or into being, a professional potter, then Alex is the tutor you need.
All I can say is doing a pottery class with Alex is the perfect way to destress. And Alex is a great teacher - what he doesn't know....every question my class asked he had a full answer. His technical knowledge is second to none - I thought he'd studied chemistry, rather than ceramics! However, he is clearly talented and makes fabulous pots. Other than that he's fun, refreshingly honest and also supportive to help you improve. I'm looking forward to booking my next set of sessions.
Had some 1:1 throwing classes with Alex and can highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new hobby or to further their skills. Alex is a very talented potter who was able to show me the basic techniques which I picked up quickly under his guidance. Great studio and location.
I was Alex's student and learnt a lot about throwing and hand-building, and felt motivated to explore all the different areas of pottery. He was always very helpful and could clearly explain complex ideas to a beginning student.
