Although it is 199 steps to the top, I find it easier to walk up there and count the steps. The views from the top are well worth the effort though. You can see most of Whitby and out to sea. It was far quieter at the top than it was in the town too.

A \must do\ when visiting Whitby, an easy descent or a relatively taxing climb with the steps marked every so often with Roman numerals every 10 steps to show you how you're getting on. Benches every so often for those wishing to take a break and handrails to help. The views from the steps over Whitby are fantastic and at one end you have the town (and some great ice cream next to the bottom step) and the other the wonderful church and graveyard and of course Whitby Abbey and the headland car park. The brewery is also worth a visit as a reward for making the climb.

It’s a nice place but not well gritted, so very slippery in snowy weather

Beautiful views when you get to the top. The steps are not for the let's say unfit. There are places to stand and have a short breather before you make the final push for the top. Not good for disabled but you can drive round to enjoy the views

199 steps. Definitely a breath taking walk if you are on the unfit side but definitely worth the climb up to the abbey few places to stop and admire the views on the way up. We’ve done it every time we come to Whitby. It’s a must if you don’t fancy the steps you can walk up the side of them cobbled road but that looks steeper and definitely don’t get the views till you reach the top with the abbey and the church yard
